British law (the Electricity at Work Regulations 1989) requires that all electrical systems (including electrical appliances) are maintained (so far as is reasonably practicable) to prevent danger. The HSE and the local authority are responsible for the policing of this legislation.

In addition the Health & Safety at Work Act 1974 (HASW 1974) is an Act set by Parliament that places a duty of care on Employers & Employees to ensure the safety of all persons using the work premises. This Act is law, and to contravene this law is a criminal offence.  Therefore is is important to maintain your electrical system to keep up to regulations to minimise and danger to employees that may arise.

In the work place a periodic inspection is designed check if an electrical installation is in a satisfactory condition for continued service therefore allowing people to continue working in the premisis. On completion of the necessary inspection and testing, an Electrical Installation Condition Report will be issued detailing any observed damage, deterioration, defects, dangerous conditions and any non-compliances with current electrical standards.
